A friend showed me this really cool site yesterday called Muxtape, located at muxtape dot com. (I’m going to refrain from linking today, we’ve been having spamming issues.)
Anyways, the site works like this. You register with the site, create a username – all that jazz, and then you upload twelve mp3’s. Then, after you are done, it creates a website streaming the mix you just made and you can share it with people online. Pretty cool stuff.
The Daily Swarm – Heavy on music industry news. Good starting point before hitting sites like Pitchfork. Gives you a broad overview of the whole spectrum.
Desipio.com – The gold standard for Chicago Cubs analysis. Andy Dolan (a longtime Cubs fan) regularly posts his criticism of the team and usually to hilarious results.
The Hype Machine – An EXCELLENT music aggregator. This website pulls music from several blogs for streaming or downloading pleasure. A great place to hear rare and unreleased tracks.
Stereogum.com – Probably the blog closest to my personal tastes. Pretty broad in terms of music they cover.
Oh No They Didn’t! – I’m so sorry.
Yes, I know… REAL late to the game on this one. Sorry I wasn’t up to the minute on my SXSW coverage…
Saw this on my friend Katie’s Facebook page and thought it was something to take a look at.
The band is called Yeasayer. They’re from Brooklyn, and they’re unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. I mean, the best way to put this (and I’ve seen them compared to this in other reviews) is that they sorta sound like the Talking Heads.. except a bit more grandiose. Check out their Myspace or website and then watch the following videos of the band on a Subway in Paris. Tremendous stuff.
They’re playing Logan Square Auditorium on April 16. I think I’m going. Any interested parties?
Cool interview and performance by Bon Iver. Gives you a little bit of insight into the recording of the album.
Les Savy Fav – Let’s Stay Friends – When I first heard of this band, I thought they were some shitty French pop trio. The I saw them on Conan and their very overweight singer started taking his clothes off to a wicked jam. I was wrong on both accounts. They’re American, and a rock and roll band. At that point, I decided I probably should give this record a spin. Good stuff.
Drive-By Truckers – Brighter Than Creation’s Dark – The DBT’s are a band I’d heard a lot about but never got around to. This record is great, a mixture of bittersweet ballads and kickass rockers. “Two Daughters and A Beautiful Wife” is one of my favorite songs of the year so far.
The Mountain Goats – The Sunset Tree – Just listen to “This Year” and you’ll understand.
